Synopsis

Infrastructure forms the backbone of our society – from roads and railways to waterworks and ports – as critical part of vital systems for mobility, water and space. But that backbone is under strain. Ageing systems, climate change and scarce resources force us to rethink fundamentally how we design, use and value infrastructure. This Design Guide starts with one urgent question: how can we make infrastructure future-proof in a world of uncertainty?  It introduces integrated approaches in which design, engineering, policy and societal value come together through a wide range of inspiring examples related to urban and regional accessibility and development, spatial quality, flood protection, and ecological restoration. Author Biographies

Hans de Boer, Deltas, Infrastructures & Mobility Initiative (DIMI), Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands

Hans de Boer was closely involved in the set- and build-up of the interfaculty organisation of DIMI as secretary and later on as coordinator for the theme of Future (proof) Built Environment & Urban Infrastructures, and as coordinator of the minor Integrated Infrastructure Design (IID). He has a theoretical background in computer science and public administration, and a long-term working experience within the domains of automation, organisation, management, and policy. Pursuing, the application of interdisciplinary- and cross-sectoral collaboration and integrated design in various design studies for urban and infrastructure development with practitioners and within the minor program with students.

Mark Voorendt, Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Mark Voorendt is a lecturer in the design of hydraulic structures, the integration of engineering and spatial design and coastal fieldwork. He obtained his PhD for his thesis on the design of multifunctional flood defences. He teaches and supervises both research and design topics but mostly design because that is where he can best contribute to the needs of students and the sector. Moreover, that is the field he feels driven to dedicate himself to.

Maurice Harteveld, Department of Urbanism, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Affiliated to the chair of Urban Design at TU Delft, Maurice Harteveld maintains an uninterrupted focus on public space. He contributed to DIMI’s 2016 City of the Future initiative and established the multidisciplinary graduation lab under the same title, linking students with practice partners to challenge mayor transitions of our times. His work promotes integrated design perspectives on infrastructure, mobility, water, governance and urban life, as reflected in his recent Nature publication. He also leads research within Mixed Methods and Design Strategies of the LDE Centre for PortCityFutures.

John Baggen, Department of Transport and Planning, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology | Section of Transport & Logistics, Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

John Baggen graduated in Architecture at Eindhoven University Eindhoven and got a doctorate at the Tinbergen Institute at Erasmus University Rotterdam in collaboration with Free University Amsterdam. He became familiar with the policy practice of spatial planning at various scale levels working for the Municipality of Tilburg and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. He was affiliated with Delft University of Technology for three decades, where he did research and provided interdisciplinary education on spatial and transport policy and on transport systems, particularly in the fields of rail and air transport.
