Engineering Leadership Development: An Integrated Framework for Practice
Synopsis
Engineering graduates increasingly operate in complex socio-technical environments that require judgement, collaboration, and contextual awareness alongside technical expertise. Yet these capabilities are often treated as peripheral rather than intentionally embedded within engineering education. This chapter presents a framework that integrates three complementary approaches to engineering leadership operating at different developmental levels. The Leadership Paradox Compass (LPC) helps learners recognise and navigate tensions inherent in engineering practice, supporting reflection on paradox, ambiguity, and decision making in action. The Engineering Leadership Orientations (ELO) model focuses on professional identity, enabling engineers to understand influence as a legitimate and meaningful dimension of engineering work. The Contextual Engineering Leadership Development (CELD) framework addresses curriculum and pedagogical design, showing how teaming, effectual behaviour, and contextual awareness can be embedded within authentic learning environments. Together, these approaches offer educators a coherent architecture spanning action, identity, and system design. Drawing on empirical research and practical implementation across multiple educational settings, the chapter provides conceptual foundations, practical examples, and guidance for integrating leadership capabilities into engineering programmes.
