Adaptability in Engineering Education
Synopsis
Adaptability is a core professional capability for engineers working in complex, rapidly changing environments. This chapter defines adaptability as the capacity to anticipate and respond to change by adjusting knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes in ways that sustain performance and long-term growth. Drawing on psychology, career development, and engineering education, it frames adaptability as a multidimensional, learnable capacity encompassing cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation, motivation, collaboration, sociotechnical awareness, and reflective practice. For engineering educators, the focus is practical. The chapter translates theory into design principles and worked examples drawn from authentic teaching contexts, demonstrating how adaptability can be intentionally cultivated through project-based learning, teamwork, intercultural engagement, mentoring, and structured reflection. It also provides guidance on recognising adaptive processes in student work, including observable indicators, artefacts, and formative cues that make adaptability visible without reducing it to a single metric. By making adaptability explicit, visible, and equitably supported, you can help students develop the judgement, resilience, and professional agency needed to navigate uncertainty and lead change throughout their careers.
