Assessment Rubrics: Design, Development and Implementation

This chapter examines the design, development, and implementation of assessment rubrics as practical tools for evaluating transferable skills in engineering education. Transferable skills are complex, context-dependent, and often assessed through authentic tasks such as projects, laboratory work, teamwork, and professional communication, making consistent and transparent assessment challenging. Rubrics address this challenge by articulating expectations through explicit criteria and performance standards, thereby supporting fairer and more consistent judgement. The chapter introduces foundational concepts underpinning effective rubric use, including evaluative criteria, performance levels, and scoring strategies, and distinguishes between commonly used rubric types such as holistic and analytic rubrics. It discusses how rubrics can be applied for formative and summative assessment purposes, highlighting their roles in supporting feedback, learning, and assessment reliability. This chapter also offers a step-by-step, practitioner-oriented guide to rubric development. This guide addresses purpose clarification, alignment with learning outcomes, criteria formulation, performance-level description, and iterative refinement through feedback and assessor calibration. Examples drawn from engineering education illustrate how rubrics can be designed and implemented to assess transferable skills within authentic assessment contexts.
