Synopsis

In education, a portfolio is a compilation of learning experiences that highlights a student’s individual learning trajectory. As an assessment method, portfolios can emphasise the learning process and support the development of self-regulation. This chapter presents a developmental portfolio used in a project-based learning module for engineering students. Through its content, the portfolio supports the development of transferable competencies, while its structured process fosters self-regulation and other lifelong learning competencies, thus preparing students for lifelong learning. Results from different campuses and across bachelor years are presented, showing how students’ portfolio outcomes developed over time, as well as how feedback practices influenced student engagement. Drawing on these findings and our experiences, we propose practical recommendations for educators, including strategies to incorporate the portfolio throughout the curriculum and to create clear expectations around feedback. In doing so, this chapter aims to inspire educators to adopt or adapt portfolio practices in ways that strengthen lifelong learning competency development in engineering education.

Dujardin, Rani (0000-0003-4584-8446) is a Doctoral Student at KU Leuven, Belgium, in the ETHER research group (Faculty of Engineering Technology) with a background in theoretical and experimental psychology. In the TRAINeng-PDP project, she studied the impact of portfolios on the preparedness of engineering students for lifelong learning.

Lynn Van den Broeck, Leuven Engineering and Science Education Center (LESEC), Faculty of Engineering Technology, KU Leuven, Belgium

Lynn Van den Broeck is a postdoc at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, KU Leuven. She holds a MSc in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in engineering education from the same institute. She is closely involved in education and, more specifically, the inclusion of professional competencies in the study programme. In addition, she is responsible for educational professionalisation and teaching assistant training. She is the chair of the study career guidance theme within LESEC, co-chair of SIG Engineering skills at SEFI. Her research interests focus on study guidance, effectiveness and efficiency of educational interventions, LLL and professional competencies, and feedback. 

Greet Langie, Leuven Engineering and Science Education Center (LESEC), Faculty of Engineering Technology, KU Leuven, Belgium

Langie, Greet (0000-0002-9061-6727) is a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, KU Leuven, Belgium. She’s a physicist by training and focuses on engineering education research, specifically on the issues surrounding the transitions from secondary education to higher education and from higher education to professional life.
