Synopsis

This introductory chapter to Part 5 focuses on scholarship and research to evaluate the development of transferable competencies and skills. Evaluation and research of educational activities provide evidence of what, how, and why some outcomes occur. This knowledge could be used by stakeholders to improve education. It also helps to inform the engineering education community about areas that require attention and are worthy of further investigation, as well as to inform future practice through evidence.  We start by introducing you to the scholarship of evaluation and research, as distinct stages in an inquiry continuum, before outlining the specific topics covered in this part of the handbook. In this context, we feel it is pertinent to establish why it is important to evaluate activities targeting the development of transferable skills and competencies in addition to the purpose of carrying out research on these topics.
