Synopsis

Evolving Education is an edited volume of manifestos written by academics, students, and education professionals aiming to reimagine higher education in a context of pressing global challenges like climate change and territorial conflicts, as well as severe austerity measures affecting universities worldwide. At its core, Evolving Education is a call to action - it is a manifesto that dares us to dream big, to think creatively, and to imagine a future where "education is freedom".
The book is not only inspirational and reflective but also provides actionable insights for evolving educators.

Author Biographies

Juliana Gonçalves, Department of Urbanism, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Juliana Gonçalves is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft. Her work spans three interconnected fields: spatial studies, participatory planning, and socio-technical systems. By engaging with questions at the intersection of these domains, she examines how space, governance, and technology co-produce social realities and shape possibilities for just futures. With a transdisciplinary and justice-centred approach, Juliana’s pedagogy encourages critical reflection and engaged education. She advocates for education as an awakening and empowering experience rather than a process of passive knowledge transmission. Her teaching invites students to grapple with real-world challenges, co-create solutions with communities, and question dominant narratives in spatial planning and development.

Trivik Verma, Bristol Digital Futures Institute | School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol, United Kingdom

Trivik Verma is an Associate Professor/Reader at the Bristol Digital Futures Institute and the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol. His research focuses on cities, inequalities, and justice. He studies various challenges of urbanisation such as segregation, inequities in access and wellbeing, transport and energy poverty, and climate-related vulnerabilities. His goal is to transform university education to reflect learning, empower minorities and shape a healthy and sustainable research culture.

Jing Spaaij, Department of Urbanism, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Jing Spaaij is a recent graduate from the MSc Urbanism program at TU Delft and member of POLIS, a study association for master students specialising in Urbanism and Landscape Architecture. Her academic interests focus on biodiversity, citizen engagement, and addressing social-spatial stigmas in neighbourhoods. Jing is part of the TU Delft Citizen Voice indicative, where she contributed to the development of three digital citizen engagement tools under the Bio-CiVo and CIVILIAN projects. She was also part of a multi-disciplinary student team, Space Oasis 1, at TU Delft’s Dream Team, contributing to the design of a lunar village.
